Sophia Bush recently went through a transformative experience.
Weeks before filing for divorce from husband Grant Hughes, the One Tree Hill alum reflected on a different emotional journey: making her stage debut in London's 2:22 A Ghost Story.
"I can only describe the calling I felt to join the 2:22 A Ghost Story company as a spiritual one," she wrote on Instagram July 21. "The pull toward this story & this cast was perhaps was the most intense I've felt in my career & the reward of being up on the boards every night was greater than I could have anticipated."
However, Sophia, 41, was "crushed" that she ultimately had to pull out of the show early and fly back home to the United States due to an illness.
"It's devastating to say goodbye to an experience that's been so incredibly fulfilling, both artistically & personally," the actress wrote. "Being a part of this company put me back in my body and in my soul. I was reminded, on a cellular level, of why I do this job & how much I love acting. I crossed an ocean to come home to myself."
She noted, "I'm sad. Happy. Immensely grateful. There is no greater creative experience than the stage. I miss it madly. I love it deeply. I cannot wait for the next one."
Her time playing Lauren in the thriller—which originally premiered in the West End in 2021—came to a halt after several cast members were "hit" with a virus in June. Most of the team recovered—except Sophia.
"After weeks of being intermittently pulled off stage & visiting multiple doctors, specialists, & an all nighter in the ER," she explained, "I've been advised by my medical team in London & America to stop performing in order to get this under control & to do so in the country where I reside under the care of my own doctors."
The John Tucker Must Die star thanked the Ghost Story cast—who became "fast family"—for being there to support her during the health crisis.
"From ensuring I made it through shows once things got dicey with everything from medicine to flat sodas hidden backstage—even packing my feverish body in ice packs from head to toe on more than one night," she said, "you made it less terrifying to be struggling thousands of miles from my home & my family."
Less than two weeks later, Sophia went through another big change when news broke of her split from Grant after a year of marriage. The pair met on a trip to Nicaragua 10 years ago, eventually striking up a romance during the pandemic and tying the knot in his native Oklahoma last year.
Neither star has publicly spoken about the split. E! News has reached out to her rep but hasn't received a comment.
