A train derailed and crashed into a residential garage in Niagara Falls Monday morning, causing loss of diesel fuel, CSX, a Florida-based locomotive supplies, said. No injuries were reported.
The train derailed near Seneca Avenue in Niagara, New York around 8:30 a.m. Monday, CSX said, with the crash damaging a residential garage and spilling diesel fuel.
"The loss is currently contained," CSX said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY. "There were no injuries, no impacts to waterways, and there is no risk to the public."
The Jacksonville-based company, which says it is one of the nation's leading transportation suppliers, said that local and state authorities were immediately notified along with the National Response Center (NRC) and that efforts were being made to safely recover the product.
Niagara Falls Fire Department Chief Gary Pochatko told USA TODAY Monday afternoon that around 1,500 to 2,000 gallons were estimated to have spilled in the incident and that multiple teams from different agencies were on scene for damage control.
Video footage from the incident shows the aftermath of the collision with the red brick structure of the garage completely wrecked. Pochatko said the crash occurred because the train did not brake and stop where it normally would, going on an extra 30 feet through the yard and into the garage.
Same garage was struck in the 1970s, resident says
“The whole house shook,” the home's resident Lori Morreale Harris told The Buffalo News. Harris told the media outlet that the same garage was struck by a train in the late 1970s when her grandparents lived in the home. The garage is located across an alley from where the tracks end and is not attached to the house. Pochatko said the house was at least 10 feet away from the garage.
Investigation ongoing
"Our primary focus right now is the health and safety of onsite staff and personnel, the surrounding community, and mitigating risk to the environment," CSX said. "CSX appreciates the swift response of the Niagara Falls fire department."
"The cause of the incident is currently under investigation," the statement added.
